      • Gazelle Squadron

As per the above Gaz News item, the Gaz Squadron are rumoured to be attending an airshow in my neck of the woods !

Does anyone know where they might be based while up here, would love to make contact and get some photos. Maybe based at Prestwick Airport itself or elsewhere ?

SA341B XW850 (WA1018) which crashed at Fordingbridge in Hampshire on 31st May 1973

The accident notes for this aircraft are as interesting as they are brief, simply stating .. "Stalled and crashed due to a wiring fault".

It sure would be interesting to know what sort of wiring fault could cause a 'stall'.

My guess: The person who reported this accident is from the fixed wing side.
Stall in planes happen at low speeds, wiring fault, he might have meant loss of control.

He might have meant Lost control in a hover/low speeds .... probably LTE.

Go to posts 5271, 5260, 5263. I wrote a long piece on this accident.
The accident report at Aviation safety network is wrong as there was at least one fatality.
I think the wiring fault is a confusion with another incident in which the strobe light wiring was causing electrical interference to the hydraulic system causing the hydraulics to cycle on and off.
I think there was an earlier post on this issue as well.
That is the first photo I have seen of the accident.
I should have added that the stall was probably jack stall, army aircraft were modified with an accumulator to combat this issue although I do not believe jack stall was the cause of the accident.
Difficult to believe this is still on my mind 50 years later.

Amelia seen here together with Tim Walker on day two of her Gazelle type rating.

Papà Brunt writes: 'Best advice I got for fenestron flying is to turn in the hover using power, particularly on a windy day. If you go left foot power off then use the power to stop your rotation as you may run out of power because of your momentum, and the wind pushing you around.'
